We are Riverblitz, an organization dedicated to keeping the Pecos and Black rivers and their surrounding areas here near Carlsbad, NM free from trash and as beautiful as ever. Every year, on the second Saturday of March, we hold an event with the aid of volunteers who come together and help us pick up the trash along our rivers. Our event was started in 2000 by a group of concerned local citizens who noticed the amount of trash and dumping along our waterways was becoming a problem. That year, this small group of people put together the first annual Riverblitz event with the help of local supporters. The first year we had around 200 volunteers and as the years have passed we've had more and more people participate. We are currently planning our 14th annual Riverblitz, to be held March 9th, 2013 and would love to have your help!
On the day of the event, our "base of operations" is at the Riverwalk Recreation Center, but we also have a sign-up area located at the Chutes, just below Brantley Dam. Both of these locations distribute trash bags, gloves, and water. The free t-shirts and lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs (a big thank you to the Sherriff's Posse for cooking!) are located at the Rec Center where we distrubute both around noon. Even though we have two main bases, we actually pick up trash from Brantley Lake all the way to Lower Tansil Dam, and in certain spots on the Black River located south of town. If you don't have a ride to these places, the day of the event we provide a shuttle that will take you from the Rec Center to the Chutes. Directions to the Chutes are available on the Map page.
Many people in Carlsbad are familiar with the area of the Pecos that stretches from the Flume to Lower Tansil Dam, but there's so much more to this beautiful river. The places that have the biggest trash problems are the stretches that extend from Brantley Dam to Avalon Lake. The first year we picked up trash, we got over 30 tons. Yes, 30 tons of trash. This was mostly accumulated large items such as couches, appliances, tires, and concrete. Over the past decade the trash has declined, specifically the larger items, but people are still leaving their stuff behind. The pictures on this site have all been taken by a Riverblitz committee member and show the lesser known areas of the Pecos and Black rivers. If you have any questions regarding the event please feel free to contact us.
